Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS)

Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS) assist supervisors and workers understand the processes that have been put in place to manage the hazards in high risk construction work. SWMS may also be developed for other work as part of the safety management system. It sets out the work steps in logical order and identifies hazards and describes the required control measures.

Safe Operating Procedures

A safe operating procedure (SOP) or safe work procedure is a written instruction to achieve consistency and understanding in a process. Safe operating procedures also provide workers with a reference to appropriate work practices and tasks in alignment with the organisations policies and procedures.

Construction WHS Management Plans

All construction projects must have a written Construction Safety Management plan prepared by the principal contractor before work on the construction project commences.

The person who commissions construction work will usually be the principal contractor. A specific principal contractor can be appointed by the client.

The OHS and WHS Regulations require that a principal contractor be appointed for construction projects. A construction project is defined as any project that involves construction work where the cost is (Depending on the jurisdiction) $250 000 or more.

A WHS management plan details how Work Health and Safety will be managed on a construction project. The WHS management plan aims to ensure the risks associated with a complex construction project are managed. Management and review of contractors and subcontractors is an essential part of the WHS management plan.

Safety In Design Reviews

Effective Safety Management at the design stage can minimise risks to Health and Safety of people who subsequently construct, occupy and maintain a facility/structure.

Consequently, clients should ensure that a designer is engaged who has a demonstrated understanding and awareness of safety risk management or other suitable credentials of Safety In Design, appropriate to the risks of the project.

Comprehensive and systematic design safety reviews should be conducted at appropriate intervals during the design process.
